13 PLACES LOST. TIME TO CHANGE DIRECTION.
Austria fell from 16th in 2020 to 29th in 2026 in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking. A warning for everyone who depends on Austria as a place to invest, work and build a business.

A lower number means a better position. The economies included change over time; the 2026 edition covers 70 economies. These are ranking positions, not percentages of economic decline.
What does the ranking tell us?
Austria’s infrastructure ranks 13th, business efficiency 33rd, economic performance 39th, and government efficiency 43rd. Infrastructure remains the strongest of its four pillars; government efficiency is the weakest.
Our interpretation: Austria has a foundation worth building on. The task is to turn that foundation into faster decisions, productive work and measurable value.
The ranking identifies a problem. It does not prove a single cause or prescribe the solution.
Three actions to change direction
1. Government: remove ONE costly delay.
Choose a permit or reporting process. Measure the time it takes. Give one person responsibility for shortening it. Publish the result.
2. Business: improve ONE customer outcome.
Choose a recurring problem: late deliveries, waste, downtime or slow service. Let employees use their knowledge—and suitable digital tools—to solve it. Measure the value delivered.
3. Leaders: compound ONE proven improvement.
When a team finds a better way, document it, teach it and apply it across the organisation. Turn individual know-how into a shared business asset.
These are RapidKnowHow® proposals, not IMD findings.
Start with a 30-day proof
Choose ONE barrier → Assign ONE owner → Measure the starting point → Act → Verify the result.
For a public service, measure days saved.
For a company, measure customer value and cash released.
For employees, measure hours freed for useful work.
A downhill racer wins by reaching the bottom.
A competitive country wins by moving up.
Austria’s next move starts with a result someone takes responsibility for delivering.
