BUY RELIABLE SUPPLY AT THE LOWEST TOTAL COST.

A low gas price is only one part of the bill. The better buying decision considers everything your factory pays to receive and use the gas.

What changes?

Traditional procurement often follows this path: specify the gas, request quotes, compare unit prices and award the contract.

The total cost of ownership process asks a wider question: which safe, suitable supply option delivers the required gas output at the lowest total cost?

Count six costs: gas purchase, delivery and surcharges, rental and maintenance, customer energy, paid handling and administration, and disruption cash exposure. Use the same useful output, purity, pressure and service requirements for each option.

The comparison in plain numbers

In our illustrative case, the traditional process costs €170,000 a year. The total-cost option costs €150,000. Its gas bill is €4,000 higher, but its overall expected cost is €20,000 lower: an 11.8% reduction.

An €8,000 one-time change cost leaves €12,000 expected net benefit in Year 1. At constant costs, the undiscounted net benefit is €52,000 over three years and €92,000 over five years, before tax.

These are invented teaching figures, not market quotations or promised results. €14,000 of the annual difference depends on an assumed reduction in disruption risk. With no reliability improvement, the annual saving is €6,000 and Year 1 net benefit is minus €2,000. Test that assumption before committing.

How to start

  1. MEASURE: choose one site and build one agreed cost baseline.
  2. AGREE: ask buyer, operations, finance and supplier to select one improvement.
  3. PROVE: run an approved pilot and sign the actual result after 30 days.

Do not treat released staff time as cash saved unless paid cost falls or additional contribution is proven. Keep uncertain disruption benefits separate. Safety, gas quality and service capability are qualification gates.
