FAIRNESS IS TESTED WHEN YOU COULD TAKE MORE.
The central question
How do I behave when I hold the advantage?
The problem
Unequal power can make apparent agreement misleading. A person may accept a decision because they fear losing work, approval or access. Formal consent alone may not reveal whether the process was understandable and fair.
The insight
Fairness requires clear rules, a chance to be heard, consistent treatment and an explanation of decisions. Outcomes need not be identical, but differences should have reasons that can be examined. Conflicts of interest should be disclosed to relevant parties.
A practical example
A large buyer could impose an unexpected cost on a small supplier. Instead, it reviews the agreed terms, asks for the supplier’s evidence and negotiates a workable allocation of the additional cost. Both sides understand what was decided and why.
ONE decision
Make the basis of one decision visible to the people it affects.
TOP 3 actions
- Identify who benefits, who carries the burden and who has little voice.
- Explain the criteria and invite relevant facts or objections.
- Document the decision, its reasons and a practical route to review errors.
30-day result
Over 30 days, track unresolved objections, disputed decisions and the time taken to resolve them. Ask affected people whether they understood the reasoning.
Your reflection
Would I regard this process as fair if I were the weaker party?
Action checklist
Before one negotiation, write down your interests, the other party’s likely constraints and the criteria you can defend openly. Aim for an agreement both parties understand and can carry out.
PASS: the commitment is clear, feasible and verifiable. REVIEW: remove the one obstacle preventing delivery before adding more rules.
