RapidKnowHow® HUMAN AND CHARACTER | Episode 01 of 10
Uphold your principle, make the trade-off explicit, and take a responsible action.
The central question
What do we do when doing the right thing costs us?
This PowerPost offers a practical reflection on behaviour and choices. The story below is illustrative, not a report of a real person or event.
1. SITUATION — See the human dilemma
A project leader discovers a serious quality defect just before delivery. Reporting it may delay the shipment, reduce the bonus and anger the customer. Concealing it may transfer the cost to someone who has no chance to protect themselves.
2. CHOICE — Make the decision visible
Protect the delivery date by hiding the defect, or disclose the problem and organise a workable remedy.
3. ACTION — Build character step by step
- Pause before making a promise. Identify who could be affected and what cannot responsibly be compromised.
- Separate verified facts from assumptions. Establish the defect, likely consequences and available remedies.
- Tell the people who need to know. Explain the trade-off clearly and propose containment, repair or a revised delivery.
- Accept responsibility for your part. Record the decision and review whether the remedy actually worked.
4. CONSEQUENCE — Check the result
The customer receives an honest explanation and a practical remedy. There may still be a commercial loss; responsible conduct does not guarantee an immediate reward.
5. LESSON — Preserve what you learn
Pressure reveals the gap between a stated principle and a chosen action. Character develops when we repeatedly close that gap.
Measurable value delivered
Track time to disclosure, containment completion and recurrence of the defect. These measures assess the response, not a person’s moral worth.
ONE decision today
Write down one principle you will uphold in your current difficult decision, then identify the first action and its likely cost.
ACTION CHECKLIST
- Name the situation and the people affected.
- Separate facts, assumptions and unknowns.
- Choose a principle and one concrete action.
- Set a completion date and a review point.
- Check the consequence, repair harm and adjust.
PASS: One responsible action completed and its consequence reviewed. FAIL: A stated intention with no action or review. At the first review, remove the one obstacle before adding more steps.
Character is shaped by temperament, experience, habits and circumstances. One action provides a signal; repeated choices provide stronger evidence. Assess behaviour carefully before labelling a person.
RapidKnowHow® — Understand the human. See the choice. Build the character.
